Bathroom rugs bring out the beauty

With so many different types of bathroom rugs to choose from, you can alter the look of your bathroom with a simple purchase. Before making your purchase, first you must decide what size of rug you would like, what color you would like, and what textures you would like. You can choose a small rug to place in front of the toilet or tub/shower, or one to cover the entire floor area.

Once you have established the size of your rug, you can start to think about what color to purchase. You can choose colors that will match with your paint scheme, colors that are light or bright to make the room look bigger, or just simply a color that you like. Be aware that darker colors, although they don’t show as much dirt or wear, may make the room appear smaller than it actually is.

So after you’ve established size and color, you can choose from many different materials and types of rugs. Anything from short shag to braided materials will be available to you. Most rugs designed to go in the bathroom are lined on the bottom with a rubber like material. This keeps the rug from slipping out of place, an important safety feature.

A bathroom rug is not only decorative, but functional when stepping out of the shower or tub. Stepping out of a shower or tub with wet feet is not only dangerous and exposes you to the chances of slipping or falling, but eventually the water can damage the flooring in the bathroom. Please keep in mind when choosing a rug that you may be stepping on it with wet feet and it may receive substantial amounts of water depending on where the rug is placed.

If you are looking for an inexpensive way to redecorate your bathroom, changing the rug is a great move. And if you tire easily of the looks of your bathroom, changing a bathroom rug occasionally is an inexpensive way to keep the room looking sharp and fresh.

For example, if you wish, you could change the color of the rug with the change of seasons—lighter colors during the spring and summer months and warmer, dark colors during fall and winter, or you can place a decorative rug in the bathroom to celebrate the holidays. Whatever your choice, the simple change of a bathroom rug can put a new look into your bathroom.

Dress Up Your Bathroom With A Shower Door

A shower door is the best way to enhance the beauty of your bathroom. It is makes the bathroom look very trendy and fashionable. It is a very useful thing to have in your bathroom and makes the place look attractive. A shower door is a very practical and logical as it prevents water from splashing all over the bathroom. It protects the rest of the bathroom from water and adds to the decor. Shower doors make it very easy to for you to clean your bathroom and protects your bathroom better than shower curtains.

You will get a wide variety of shower doors to choose from. Give freedom to your individuality in the choice process. The two most gorgeous are the glass shower door and the frameless shower door. The glass doors boast of a wide array of styles, some are lightweight while some are on the heavy side. There is a wide choice for you in the variety of glasses too, like the etched, frosted, molded and more.

You are also showered with different styles to match with various layouts. If your bathroom is small, a sliding shower door will be the best choice. In a sliding shower door you should take care to keep the path clean and don't let moulds, dirt or soap build up to jam the track so that the door can run smoothly.

Accordions are doors that open without tracks but these are good for large bathrooms. Before installation ensures that there is enough space so that the door can open outward smoothly.

Frameless shower doors are the ultimate in convenience and elegance. Their smooth seamless finishes make them easy to maintain. The useful thing about a frameless shower door is that there are no edges to trap dirt, so it is easy to keep clean. Hardware can be attached straight onto the tempered glass to create that beautiful smooth finish.

You can also have your shower doors customized for the ultimate luxury look. You can then make an exact match for your bathroom decor and really add a touch of elegance to your bathroom.

You can hire a contractor to install your shower door or you can do it on your own. The project is not easy; you will need experience or at least recruit a good guide who will make you sail through your endeavor smoothly.

When you look online you can find many styles to choose from and can do comparison-shopping for prices as well. It is good to gather a number of styles and prices so that you can compare and save time. When you look at a picture online you will be able to envision the shower door in your bathroom and understand how it may look.

Before you decide on your shower door always take a good look at the look and feel of your bathroom. Bathrooms are very individual and the door will set the tone of the whole room. It is important to have an idea of what you might need and how it will look. If you do this you will avoid costly mistakes. Once you have installed your shower door it is difficult to make changes so try to get it right the first time by proper planning.

Bathroom Remodeling Your Project Management Options

Caution - Project managing your bathroom remodel can be detrimental to your health.

This is the tale of an acquaintance of mine who decided to handle the project management of her bathroom remodel by herself. She's a teacher and is very organised. She also has more opportunity to be at home than most of us so she was well placed to tackle the project, or so she thought.

My friend did a great job preparing for the project. She made sure that she had decided exactly what would be going into the bathroom and how it was going to fit. She made accurate scale drawings of the new bathroom on graph paper square from all directions so that they could be used in discussions with contractors and to make sure that everyone knew exactly what they were doing.

Remodeling jobs to be managed

My friend made a lot of lists during the course of the remodeling project and one of the first was a list designed to break the project down into smaller chunks.

* Remove existing bathroom fixtures.
* Legal requirements compliance.
* Design and styling of the bathroom.
* Walls, widows and other major building tasks.
* Interior walls finishing.
* Install plumbing.
* Install electrical appliances and wiring.
* New bathroom fixtures fitting.
* Wall tiling.
* Flooring.
* Remedial work.

That's a long list and she knew that it was going to take a fair number of contractors to do it all. Before she could go looking for people she needed to work out what skills they would need. So she produced a list that looked similar to the one below.

Skill requirements for bathroom remodeling

* Plasterer
* Electrician
* Carpenter
* Glazier
* Builder
* Flooring specialist
* Plumber

The phone book and the Internet gave her a lot of leads to appropriate contractors but my friend discovered that she got the best information from asking around the staff in the local bathroom showrooms. They not only seemed to know all the contractors in the area but they also knew what they were good at and how available they might be. This saved my friend loads of time.

The project management starts

Making a plan of the project was the next thing to do and this is where it started to get difficult. Because there were so many people involved it wasn't easy to get everyone to agree to do things when my friend wanted them to do it. She wanted to get the project done during the school holidays when she would have more time but many of the contractors had children too and they wanted to go on holiday at that time.

My friend managed to produce a project plan in the end that everyone could agree to and she thought that she had done very well. She was pleased with herself for that but I'm afraid that it was the last time that she felt she was able to do that.

Let the problems commence

The Fitters stripped out the old bathroom items on time but the delivery of the new fixtures was late. The workers turned up on time to fit the new fixtures but they had to be sent away to come back when the delivery arrived. This had a knock on effect to the remainder of the project plan for the bathroom remodel and threw my friends carefully laid out plan out of the window.

Project management is much more difficult than it seems

The delivery delay was just the beginning of the problems my friend had to deal with. The wrong washbasin was delivered and it was too big for the space allowed. The electric shower didn't work and it had to be replaced. The plumbing sprung a leak, which wasn't noticed until the plumber had left.

It seemed like there was no end to it in sight, the original 10 day project turned into 12 weeks and it still wasn't quite complete then. I don't think that my friend will be doing this kind of thing again very soon.

Find someone else to manage your redesign project for you

You don't need to do the project management part all by yourself I'm very pleased to say. I know it looks like a fun way to spend your summer vacation but project management is a very difficult job that rapidly gets more complex as more people are involved. Find and hire a project manager to do all this for you. It might look like an expensive option to begin with but it's a lot less stress and might not be that much more expensive by the time the project is complete.

How To Choose New Kitchen Countertops When Kitchen Remodeling

Have you recently made the decision to remodel your kitchen? If so, what would you like to have remodeled? There are some homeowners who only choose to have a specific part of their kitchen remodeled, but then there are others who want everything changed.

Whether you want to only improve a small part of your kitchen or if you want a completely different kitchen, there is a good chance that you may be looking for a new kitchen countertop. If so, have you decided on which type of countertop you would like?

When it comes to choosing new kitchen countertops, for your kitchen remodeling project, there are a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration. One of the most important things to keep in mind is your kitchen cabinets. Kitchen countertops are almost always placed on top of kitchen cabinets or cupboards. If you are looking to remodel your cabinets as well, it may be a good idea to pick out all of your supplies and materials at the same time. This will help to ensure that your new kitchen countertop not only looks nice, but that it also compliments the kitchen cabinets that you will have installed.

Perhaps, the most important thing to keep in mind, when choosing your new kitchen countertops is the cost. Laminate countertops are often considered the most affordable of all countertops. Despite being the most affordable, they are often considered plain. If you are looking to not only change your kitchen around, but improve the appearance of it, you may be looking for something better. A large number of homeowners choose to make their new kitchen countertops out of wood materials or marble.

Although it is important to focus on the beauty and overall appearance of a countertop, it is also important to make sure that you can afford it. If you are remodeling your entire kitchen, it may be a good idea to make a list of materials that you will need or wish to have, in addition to a budget. If you mistakenly spend too much money on kitchen countertop materials, you may find it difficult to afford to remodel the rest of your kitchen.

While there is a chance that you may already know what type of new kitchen countertop you would like to have installed, there is also a chance that you may not. If this is the case, you are advised to start shopping. Whether you look for kitchen countertop materials online or in one of your local home improvement stores, there is a good chance that you will come across a wide selection of materials, all with different designs and styles.

Shopping or at least browsing is one of the best ways to get ideas. In fact, doing your shopping and browsing at the place where you plan on buying your remodeling supplies from is a great way to get price estimates, which are essential when kitchen remodeling is being done a budget.

Once you have decided which type of materials you would like to use for your kitchen countertops, whether they be a traditional green laminate color or a beautiful marble color, you will need to decide how your kitchen countertop will be installed. If you desire, you can seek assistance from a professional kitchen remodeling expert or a general contractor; however, you may want to do your own countertop installation. With a set of directions, you will find that it is relative easy to install your own kitchen countertop, even if you do not have any home improvement experience. Many kitchen countertop materials come with directions, but if not, you could easily purchase a how-to book for a relatively affordable price.

Make Your Kitchen Cabinets Look Great for Less

Kitchen cabinets are one of the most prominent features in your kitchen. If your cabinets are looking worn or drab, it affects the whole look and feel of your kitchen.

The good news is there are several options available to you that can easily update your kitchen with a modern look. Some options are expensive and others are more economical.

If you like the cabinet layout and the cabinets are in good condition, refacing or resurfacing your kitchen cabinets may be a good choice for you.

Refacing or resurfacing consists of replacing the cabinet doors and drawer fronts with new ones and then treating the cabinet frame with a matching veneer. There are many types of woods and plastics available for this, so your options are virtually unlimited.

To get the best results, it’s always best to hire a professional to do this work. It can be quite expensive, though, ranging anywhere from $3500 to over $10,000. The work usually takes 2-4 days, depending on how many cabinets and drawers are involved.

If your cabinets are weak or damaged or you just want to change their design, replacing them entirely is another option. Replacement cabinets may not cost much more than refacing/resurfacing them, either. Brand new cabinets can add more usefulness to your kitchen and increase the value of your home, as well

If resurfacing or replacement of your kitchen cabinets doesn’t fit your budget, there are much less expensive alternatives.

My first choice for renewing the look of kitchen cabinets is paint. What a difference a coat or paint can make!

For a retro look you can use splashy colors such as pink, turquoise or orange. Be brave and paint designs on the cabinets or use stencils or a faux finish. Add some matching hardware and you’ve got new cabinets for less than $300!

Another idea is to permanently remove all the cabinet doors. This wouldn’t be appropriate or even functional for every style of kitchen. It might work well for a cottage kitchen design or even an antique Victorian design. You could line the shelves with lace or doilies that flap over the edge to add to the look.

An alternative to completely removing the cabinet doors is to replace them with old windows that are the right size. You could also create new doors from different types of materials such as bamboo or fabric.

Another idea for resurfacing kitchen cabinets is to wallpaper them or apply contact paper. A plain pattern is best and, of course, make sure it is washable. You don’t necessarily need to cover the whole surface. You could cut out different shapes or patterns and apply them to the cabinet surface. This would be a good short-term solution to freshening up your kitchen.

So there you have it. There are many ways to make your kitchen cabinets look great without breaking the bank!

Buying Guide For Bedroom Furniture

Of all the hassles and nuances you go through while picking the right bedroom furniture and furnishings for your home, reaching a ‘stuck-up’ situation can be the worst. It can happen when you buy furniture without looking into practical details of your home, or a particular room, the bedroom, for instance. Buying bedding set, bedroom mirrors and storage furniture like an armoires and dressers may be tricky. The kind of practical problems you face while buying furniture is different from the world of modern bedroom furniture and suites that you see on online furniture stores.

It helps to have a basic guideline in place. Here are a few tips on buying furniture that fits your home,

1. Local retailers can be a source of information to help you decide. Sometimes you may end up finding a great deal unlike retail shops that spend so much on floor space and as a result, hike up furniture prices. As online furniture stores save on this part, they get to pass on some part of the savings to customers as discounts.

2. Define your style. Each one of us has his own unique liking. If Bahamian is your style statement, you can buy furniture that fits the idea; and also combine it with other traditional and modern furniture.

3. Bed sizes
Who will sleep in the bed? What is the size of your bedroom? Take into account the number of people and the size of the person/s. Master beds are the largest, followed by King-size beds (California and standard), queen beds, full beds and twin beds. The dimensions of each size are as follows:

California king bed: 72 inches wide x 84 inches long
King bed: 76 inches wide x 80 inches long
Queen bed: 60 inches wide x 80 inches long
Full bed (or double bed): 54 inches wide x 75 inches long
Twin bed: 39 inches wide x 75 inches long (80 inches for extra long twin beds)

4. Bed Design
The construction of a basic bed is simple. It has a headboard on one end, footboard on the other. In between is the frame whereon the mattress fits. Depending on your taste, you can opt for anything from low-slung platform beds with an Oriental touch, to regular beds with much classy color and finish options. It is good to keep in touch the kind of scheming you plan to have with your bed. Then there are futons, day beds and trundle beds that make a great combo of utility and style.

5. Bed construction
Wood is the most common material used in bed construction. The advantages are sturdiness, longevity and easy maintenance. However, other material like powder-coated steel and brass are popular for its robustness and sleek features. Depending on your lifestyle, you can choose one that suits your taste and practical needs of your home. You don’t want a bulky bed when you keep shifting places more often. Something neat and handy, which can be assembled and dissembled easily, may be the best choice. So assess your need, first.

6. Night stands
Nightstands may be a tricky thing to choose. Especially if you have a designer bed, teaming up a pair of nightstand with other furniture and the overall theme may be difficult. But you can always get suites that come with complementing nightstands, armoires, dressing tables and mirrors. If you already have a bed, then you can opt for a design that is either the same color/finish as the bed or something complementing that fits with other furniture items in your bedroom.

7. Wardrobe/ Armoire
A wardrobe or armoire is one of the most important features in the bedroom. Depending on the number of people, the armoire should be combination of functionality and space, with drawers, hanging bars and other units you desire. Classic wooden armoires are popular, so are glass and wood wardrobes that look modern. Make sure you check the door dimensions of your bedroom to make moving the armoire easy.

8. Dressers, Mirrors and Chests
Well, we all know the story of cluttered drawers and closets. If you practically estimate the kind of space you need on daily basis, you can round up on a sensible dresser with spacey drawers and a complimenting mirror. Roomy drawers also allow more air and help with the uncluttered space we all so much crave for. While chests are vertical, dressers are wide and horizontally inclined. Check the dimensions carefully, for you need space to move around the bedroom.

9. Mattresses
Beds and mattress is an inseparable pair, both complimenting each other. There are regular mattresses and box spring mattress that require a basic construction. While others are built in a manner that needs no box springs, especially platform beds.

Bed sets or suites are also great money savers. You need not hassle over too many details. You get a matching bed, night stand and dresser together, so you won't have to spend much time stewing and fretting over whether or not all your wood bedroom furniture will match. If your bedroom is large enough, also consider new chairs, a bookcase or two, maybe a new entertainment center.

With a new bed, you may want to add fresh bedding. Go for subtle serene shades that go with the curtains, wall paint and rest of the décor. With our huge discounts and low shipping, you can furnish your whole house without ever leaving it.

Keeping Hard Wood Flooring Looking Its Best

Hard wood flooring remains a popular choice in home decorating. The warmth and beauty of hardwood adds to the value of your home. You have a variety of choices in colors and styles of wood. There is an option for every home from traditional to contemporary.

Choosing Hard Wood Flooring

You have several choices in styles for the overall look of your hardwood floor.

o Plank style flooring material is wide and resembles several strips of wood together in one plank. The planks are between three and six inches wide. The benefit of planks is the installation is a bit faster, since the planks cover a wider area than individual strips.

o Strips are smaller, up to three inches wide at most. These are beneficial for making the room appear larger.

o Solid flooring is one large piece of wood. These vary in thickness and are a custom made floor. They can be refinished many times over the life of the floor.

o Parquet floors are squares of hardwood that resemble ceramic tiles in size. Some are glued and others are nailed down. The squares can be arranged in a geometric design for a unique look.

Your other major choice in hardwood flooring is to get one that is unfinished or come pre finished. Pre finished floors come with a factory finish. These are very popular and easier to install. However, they are more expensive. Many find the additional price worth the money, as it saves time in staining and sanding.

Unfinished flooring must be finished after the floor is installed. You stain and coat the wood with urethane to protect the finish. The sanding and finishing process takes several days. You need to allow sufficient time for the surface to cure at each stage in the process before sanding. The floor must be sanded after each stage of the finishing process. Floor sanders can be used for this process.

Installing Hard Wood Flooring

Proper measurement is essential when ordering materials for your room. You will need a saw to cut the planks of wood to fit around corners and through doorways. For a more professional look, remove all the baseboards and trim before you start. Replace these after the installation is complete. The seams should be staggered as the planks are laid.

Before the installation process is started, be sure the subfloor is level. This should be done for any floor including hardwood, bamboo flooring, cork flooring or pergo flooring. If the floor isn’t level, use asphalt tiles to level it prior to beginning the installation.

Special paper can be used under the hardwood to avoid squeaking sounds when you walk on the floor. The planks should be nailed through the subfloor and into the joists for a stable floor that won’t move. Start the installation in the center of the room and move outward for the best, most even look.

Once the floor is laid, it needs to be sanded. Floor sanders can be rented through home improvement centers or any store that rents tools. Sand the floor evenly and don’t stay too long in any one area of the room. This can cause uneven spots.

Keeping Hard Wood Flooring Looking its Best

The care needed depends on the finish on your particular floor. Refer to the manufacturer’s directions regarding the care of pre finished floors. If your floor is finished with urethane, sweep a few times each week to remove dirt and dust. Wipe spills with a damp towel, but don’t use a very wet mop. This can damage the floor.

If the floors are waxed, you will need to buff occasionally and wax the floor. Using area rugs and door mats can help keep the floor from becoming very dirty. Protect the wood with pads on the legs of all your furniture. This will help prevent scratches and damage to the wood.

Funky Furniture IS Everywhere, If you Know Where To Look!

The last place that should be visited is the local furniture mega-store, especially when the desire is to own some exclusive, unique, never before funky furniture. Irrespective of the budget, where there is a will there is a way. There are options and places that cater to tastes and fancy of one and all - these are not the mega stores. You just need to know where to look and you will find some cool furniture of your choice, no matter where you live.

If you're on a budget, check to see where the nearest Ikea is. Ikea furniture is fabulous for those with a limited amount of money to spend on furniture. While the quality may not be the best you can get some excellent deals and they always have cutting edge designs. Ikea also has a wide variety of funky bedding and slip covers to make any old worn out furniture look like new.

Ikea offers a huge variety of furniture and has everything from love seats and couches to bookshelves and CD racks. You can also find everything you need to stock your kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. Ikea is the perfect place for students to shop or those who have just purchased their own homes and don't want old hand me downs.

Value Village, or any other second hand stores are a great place to find unique one of a kind furniture. You can find many retro pieces at second hand stores and many of them are in great condition. If you have found a piece of furniture that you really like, but it is old and ratty, consider getting it reupholstered or you could even do it yourself. If you think this may cost too much consider the price compared to buying a brand new piece of furniture. It may be well worth your while.

Another good place to look for unique furniture is at antique stores. The prices might be higher than at secondhand stores, but you can shop for and find great deals.

An option worth considering is getting custom- made furniture that suits your requirement. While these are more expensive when compared to Ikea or any other ready furniture store, you can get exactly what you want and will probably enjoy it for many more years than if you're just settling for something. By looking around, you can probably find a store that offers great custom-made furniture at a reasonable price.

Trendy furniture stores are popping up all over the place and if you live in a big city, there is probably a specific area of town where many have set up shop. While this type of furniture can be very expensive, since it's very in vogue right now, you probably won't see it in anyone else's home.

For a shoe string budget when buying even a second hand piece is out of the question, the answer lies in slipcovers. These slipcovers can be as unique as you want them to be, can be changed often and are easily available in most home and linen shops.

If you are looking for new furniture there are a variety of ways to make sure that what you buy represents your style, rather than any old thing you picked up on sale. By looking in some unconventional shops such as second hand stores, you are sure to find something that is perfect.

Home Decorating with Asian Decor and Asian Furniture

One of the recent trends in home decorating is the influence of the Far East. With its simplicity and attention to space, this lends itself well to our hectic Western lifestyle. A lot of the elements of Asian home decorating can be trace back to two schools of thought, one originating from China and the other from Japan.

Feng Shui is a Chinese concept of space and object placement. Feng Shui associates the home with both health and prosperity. There are various rooms in which Feng Shui is more prevalent. The kitchen is one of them. Couple this perspective with the role of the kitchen as "the heart of the home," and you can see that any feng shui in this room can have a significant impact on your family. A few things you can try are to place Buddha statues at strategic places. Buddha statues are known to add vibrant chi power to your home. Especially the Laughing Buddha statue. Buddha statues can be made from various stones. Jade as well as bronze are the most popular choices. Quan Yin is the female version of Buddha.

Common Feng Shui gifts include Chinese dragons. These dragons are said not only to provide powerful chi energy, but also keep evil spirits from entering your home. For better wealth, riches and prosperity, one can turn to Chinese Feng Shui money frogs. These frogs are made from either jade or agate. They symbolize fortune and good luck with your hard work and clever mind. If you’re looking for a healthier frame of body and mind, an Asian Feng Shui crystal globe might be your answer. This is one of the most commonly used cures and produces amazing results. When sunlight hits these crystals, beams of colored light radiate in all directions activating chi energy, and can also be used to slow down chi. Incidentally, various Asian animal figures such as jade horses can also be used to the same effect.

The Japanese perspective of home decorating and home furnishings is quite different. Rather than concentrate on objects to attract or repel energies, the Japanese focuses on spatial matters. It uses room dividers known as Shoji screens to separate form and function within a living space. A single Shoji screen can transform a dull square room into practical, attractive living areas. These oriental screens are often made with rice paper and can have vibrant colors or symbols. Some common designs are bamboo tree shoji screen, cherry blossom shoji screen or Geisha shoji screen. Light also plays a vital role in Japanese home design. Japanese lanterns are known for their boxy shape which reflects strength and substance. The thin rice paper allows ample light to shine through while displaying the intended images, much like the way silk paintings are. In fact, Japanese lanterns are sometime made from silk.

We hope you enjoyed our brief tour about Asian décor and Asian furniture with a Chinese and Japanese flair.

Leather Furniture - How to Care

Have you ever wondered if what you know about leather furniture is accurate? Consider the following paragraphs and compare what you know to the latest info on leather furniture.

Leather is the most durable fabric used for furniture today. Although leather is so resistant to harm, it is always wise to take precautions when taking care of you’re furniture in order to ensure it always looks great. Where you decide to place your furniture is very important if you want it to last a long time. Leather should not be placed within two feet of any direct heat source, including fireplaces, radiators or heating vents. Direct sunlight should also be avoided, because over many years the leather will begin to dry out and fade. It would also be wise to place your furniture in a place where many people will not be constantly rubbing against it causing irreversible marks. Most marks can be removed with leather conditioners, but over time there will probably be wear and tear that you cannot fix.

Cleaning your leather is also very important for keeping it young and beautiful. Each week you should dust it by rubbing it down with a cloth. This keeps the leathers pores free of any dust particles. If someone happens to spill food on your leather you should wipe it up immediately with a wet cloth and liquid hand soap. More serious spills such as blood, urine, grease, wax or ink should be removed using a leather cleaner immediately after the spill occurs. When you first buy your leather, you should apply a protector to ensure years of beautiful furniture. After this you should be cleaning your leather thoroughly four times a year. You should be using a professional leather cleaner and then seal it again with the protector. If you follow these simple instructions, you should be fully rewarded and satisfied with your leather purchase.

So now you know a little bit about leather furniture. Even if you don't know everything, you've done something worthwhile: you've expanded your knowledge.

Interior Design - Balance, Proportion, Rhythm, and Scale

Whether you have just bought your first new home or are planning to redo an old home from scratch, the elements and principles of design are important tools to ensure a successful outcome. The elements are your raw materials much like paints are to an artists and include space, line, form, color, and texture. The principles of design refer to how you make use of these different elements and related to balance, proportion, rhythm, and scale. They give a room unity and harmony.

The number one principle of design is balance and refers to the visual equilibrium of a room. Careful consideration is given to the placement of objects within a room according to their visual weight. Line, form, color and texture all help to determine their visual weight, which is merely how much space objects takes up within a room. Try to distribute various objects throughout a room to maintain balance. Formal balance refers to symmetrical balance which creates a kind of mirrored effect. Informal balance uses different objects of the same visual weight to create a sense of equilibrium in a room. It gives a spontaneous, warm feeling to a room.

The second principle of design is emphasis which refers to the focal point of a room. The focal point is an obvious feature in a room to which the eye is attracted and could be anything from a fireplace, a piece of artwork, or a window treatment featuring a beautiful view. The focal point of a room should be emphasized with the use of line, form, color and texture.

The third principle of design is rhythm which controls the eyes as they move around a room. Rhythm allows the eyes to move around from one object to another and creates a harmonious atmosphere in a room. Rhythm is created through repetition of line, form, texture and color. It can also be created by progression which is simply a gradual increasing or decreasing in size, direction or color.

The forth principle of design is proportion and scale. Proportion refers to how the elements within an object relate to the object as a whole while scale relates to the size of an object compared to the space in which it is located.

The fifth principle of design is harmony and unity. A well designed room will have a unified whole that gives a sense of order. The shapes and sizes of the objects in the room are consistent, with a harmony of color and texture. Repeating elements, balancing them throughout a room and adding a little variety for interest will give a room a personality all its own.

Decorating Your Home in Style

Creating a cohesive interior design for you home isn’t that hard if you know some of the basics. In fact, decorating your home so that all the various elements combine to create the look you’ve always wanted can be a lot of fun.

Following are some proven tips to help you turn your house into a designer home:

Taking the first step

As they say, let’s start at the beginning. Chances are good that your home is a mish mash of furnishings, art, accents and accessories that have been collected over time. To create the perfect designer look, you want to first consider the purpose for each room, how you want it to look, your personal tastes, features that can and can’t be changed, and finally, the budget you have available.

Start with the key elements

The success of a room’s design lies in the balance you create. The basics of good design are proportion, balance, contrast, rhythm, pattern/texture and harmony. Knowing how these elements work together will help you design your space so that it’s not only beautiful, but comfortable and functional as well.

Proportion

Scale is one of the most important things to consider when creating the look of a room. A room that is proportioned correctly will feel welcoming while an incorrectly portioned room will just feel crowded and unfriendly. The trick is to match pieces in terms of their scale. A large overstuffed sofa needs an equally large end table or coffee table; otherwise, these accents simply disappear as the sofa dwarfs them proportionally. When considering scale, look to the other rooms in your home for furniture that may be a better fit with the focal pieces you have in your room.

Balance

When creating balance, there’s two ways to go here. The first is symmetrical design, where everything is perfectly balanced. With symmetrical design, there’s roughly two of everything or items are mirrored in the room. For instance, one chair is placed exactly opposite another one just like it. While this creates balance, it can also make a room look static and lacking any visual interest or energy. Experienced designers use asymmetry to create this interest. Objects balance well because they are judged by their visual weight, not pairings. For instance, you may have a large sofa on one side of the room that is balanced by two large overstuffed chairs with an accent table in the middle and floor lamp behind. These pieces balance the sofa visually, even though they aren’t equal in size or shape. The design works because there is balance in the asymmetrical layout of the furniture.

Contrast

Imagine walking into a white room with white carpet and white furniture. Pretty boring, huh? Contrast helps draw the eye around a room through the intelligent use of color. Bold use of colors creates energy while the use of muted shades in complementary tones creates calm. The more contrast you create, the easier it is for the human eye to follow the intended design of the room, moving visually from one space to another, guided by the use of color and contrast.

Rhythm

While creating contrast with the use of light and dark tones can be effective, it can also create boredom. To keep the room connected, you want to use rhythm. This means reusing specific colors, patterns, textures or themes throughout the room. Pick a couple main colors and repeat them in different ways in your paint scheme, fabrics and accents.

Pattern & Texture

As the eye moves about a room, it picks up specific patterns. These are grouped together, so a blue wall is combined with a striped piece of fabric that has the same blue in it. Patterns that don’t fit create conflict in the mind, compromising the appearance of the space. Again, you want to pick one or two primary patterns or textures and vary them within the color palette you’ve already created for the room. Right alongside the elements of contrast and rhythm in home decorating is pattern/texture.

Harmony

If you’ve ever heard three singers sing different parts that sound amazing together, then you already know what harmony is. The same is true for the harmony in your home. Different colors, different designs and different proportions combine to create a new look that was never there before, just as new notes are created by singers singing three different parts. The room is suddenly complete. It has a look that if you remove just one element, won’t have that harmonic feel to it any longer. When you’ve achieved harmony, you’ve achieved your design goals.

The Comfort of Nature: The Benefits of Quality Cedar Furniture

Adirondack chairs and other outdoor furniture can be made out of just about any wood or even plastic. So why choose cedar? Firstly, cedar is a naturally beautiful wood as well as being incredibly durable and versatile, which is why it is used to construct everything from siding to decks to furniture and even roofing shingles. The natural preservative oils which give the wood its characteristic smell also makes it very insect and rot resistant.

Cedar is not a very dense wood, making it one of the lightest softwoods available. Cedar also boasts an incredible thermal co-efficient. That means that the little tiny "air pockets" between the cells of the wood end up acting as an insulator when the wood is dry. If it is hot outside, for example, cedar will remain at a lower temperature than most other materials that conduct heat with more efficiency (e.g. other hardwoods, metals and some plastics). The result is a cooler chair to sit on. And don't forget, because it is a lightweight wood it will be easier for you to move it around (and store it away) than a heavy hardwood chair.
Even though cedar is a lightweight wood you will not be sacrificing strength. It is a full 80% the strength of mighty OAK! That's tough!

Cedar also has amazing dimensional stability. Put simply, this means cedar naturally tries to equalize its moisture content to match that of the air around it, like all woods. However, unlike many other woods, cedar does not expand or contract very much when it is absorbing or evaporating moisture. This is very important because while other harder, denser woods will tend to crack or warp from season to season, cedar tends not to crack or warp. If you live in an area where humidity levels can vary wildly between seasons, cedar is a must for you.

Cedar has a very low flame-spreading ratio and is low on the "smoke developed" scale when burning as well. This means that it doesn't spread fire as fast nor produce as much smoke as some other types of wood.
Finally, cedar is very decay and weather resistant. If you leave the furniture outside you have the option of either staining it every year or two if you want to maintain its fresh new look, or allowing it to age gracefully into a beautiful silvery gray color. If you choose to leave cedar permanently outside through all of the seasons, every day, every month, every year, we highly recommend treating it to protect the furniture properly and greatly extend its natural life. After all, cedar is resistant to decay but is not impervious to it. No wood is impervious to natural aging. Staining cedar just gives it an extra durability edge against Mother Nature, especially if it is left in constant contact with the ground.

As many turn to furnishing their outdoor spaces to add valuable living space to their homes rather than costly home additions, cedar's use in adirondack furniture and other outdoor furniture has become a very popular choice once again. It traditionally costs less that teak and mahogany, but lends the same weathering benefits as its more expensive counterparts. Choosing cedar as the wood for your next outdoor furniture purchase makes sense both in terms of material quality and monetary value.

Color Schemes for Interior Decorations

It is often easier to decorate around the house; there exist some amount of spontaneity inspiring you to plunge into your own styling. When it comes to wall color schemes, things turn the other way. For amateurs and enthusiasts and homemakers too, this field appears a bit risky, with lots to lose— time, money, and efforts to start with, not to mention the redoing it requires.

You don’t need to feel overwhelmed with the ordeal. To plan and co-ordinate color scheme for every room in the home, you can take one step at a time. Assess each room individually and make notes as to the amount of natural light it receives, the kind of lighting you have used and the color that will best compliment the natural architectural features of your home. It’s easy to estimate these details, if you have lived in the house for some time.

Before you decide, take a closer look at the existing carpeting, flooring and woodwork and it will allow you to make a safe choice. On an average, color scheme on the walls will helps you to determine the harmony between colors to be used throughout the décor. Color wheels are often used to determine the complimentary colors; you can do the accents furnishings (rugs, lamps, paintings) and furniture in the complimentary colors. Some common schemes for selecting the best color for a space,

• Monochromatic Color Scheme: The most common one, it uses a single color in different shades, tints, values, textures and hues to bring the harmony and flow, a sense of uniformity to a place.
• Analogous scheme: This one uses adjacent colors on the color wheel, allowing you many possibilities within the warm or cool color category. Plan the colors diligently, for it is important for the colors to come out as a great combo.
• A complementary scheme: Here, one can use the colors opposite each other on the color wheel, again a difficult task as the balance of colors will take some careful thinking. Considered bold and modern.
• Triadic Color Scheme: This one uses three hues. Each is placed consecutively or at equal distances from each other. For example, yellow, green and red, this scheming uses their tones, shades and scales in three hues placed at equal distances from each other.On studying the color wheel and looking up different color scheming, get a practical view and start planning. Here are a few steps for your consideration,
• When you have decided on the color palette for a room, start with the lighter shades for walls, medium for furniture and windows (or contrasts), doors etc. If you don’t want to change the furniture, work around a wall color that is a shade lighter in the same order. Accessories may look great in the darkest of shade on your color card.
• Lighter shades like cream, whites, lemon, Ivory can make a big difference in making a space look larger. You can use a lighter shade as the base or neutral color; play with contrast and bolder shades for rest of the décor.
• You need to have ‘eye resting point’ where all the colors break even. Nothing big or too loud, a great complimentary colored vase or bowl or art piece or painting that highlights the accents, and harmonizes the interiors in a balancing art.
• Usually, people use boldest of colors on fabrics like cushions, curtains and mats. You can use harmonize fabrics by using colors as accent fabrics on chairs, decorative pillows, tablecloths and mats.
• Repeat each colors in an equal proportion throughout the room, and in at least 3-4 places. The best color ratio: Divide color use to approximately 60% of the room in the background (lightest) color, 30% in the mid-tone color, and 10% in the brightest, accent colors.

Play within the color rules, but when it comes to creativity, don’t overlook your own power. You can do wonders with pieces and bits within the arena and create a space that reflects your taste, your individuality.

Home Interior Decoration Ideas

Interior decorations are often associated with mere interior embellishments. It is difficult to bestow one particular meaning to this art. Renovations can also include rebuilding something within a home as part of interiors. On a practical note, the concept of interior decorations develops from the spirit of individual taste and likings. You can always rely on professional help, provided the person is willing to do her job after a thorough research into your unique taste and lifestyle.
There are so many ways to go about it. Planning in advance will help you with many factors, including your budget and practicality. If you plan on hiring an Interior Decorator, make sure he spends time with you and your family, it is important to make him understand your specific preferences (colors, dislikes, etc). If you plan to do it yourself, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences. After all, you understand your home the best. But, as it quite often happens, you can get lost in the process, so the first step would be planning. Write down the plan, and start with a realistic budget, following are some of the important questions you can ask yourself before you start,

You can make columns with figures once you have estimated the basics,

• How much are you willing to spend (read BUDGET)?
• Do you want to start with a room or include the entire house?
• Which is the room you would like to start with?
• What is each room used for? Who is going to use the rooms?
• What is the theme you have in mind? Anything specific?
• Would you like to change the wall color/paper?
• Do you prefer low-maintenance interiors or you can do with a high-maintenance décor?
• Do you have kids? Pets? Do you want to inculcate any special care or theme for them?
• Does your budget include new furniture? (Make a list of it)
• Do you plan to use stuff at home to create your own lamps, hangings etc.?
• What needs to be changed? Work on things you really want to change, and make a separate ‘Wish List’ for dream things.
• Concentrate on the ‘Do’ list first.

Although basic, the answer to the above questions will bring the real picture in front of your eyes. This will help you in practically estimating the cost, and stirring your plan in the right direction. When you are through with the plan, start with a room by measuring its area. And write in front of it the things you will be doing—wall paint/paper; change side tables, add lamp, do panels, change rugs, and so on. After surveying each room (or just a room incase you wish to start with one), and practically jotting down things to be done, now tally this list with your original list(anything from the wish list peeping out?).

Now work on details like the wall color schemes or wall paper, try to use a basic color for all rooms for it will help in keeping the uniformity of your home intact (and costs down), and you can work on different combos with it. For wallpapers, you can use the same background color and work on the print and patterns. A combo of wall paint and paper also looks great with a little thought. You can play with colors on the rugs, curtains and lighting. If modern colors appeal to you, you can work in a combination of colors (complimentary) that go with your furniture and curtains. That should help you with getting started…all the best!

Made in italy, classic style furnishing complements in solid wood

In fact, the tradition of the northern Italian furniture factories (particularly those in Veneto and Lombardy) is a significant baggage and know-how that has reached an important expertise.

So what is the actual risk for these companies?

The main difficulty consists in being able to make the most of these precious inherited competences and sell them in the right terms, in the right moment and in the right way.

Nowadays, where the modern society doesn’t assess the quality of an item almost anymore but its production costs and time, a craft-made good expressly made on measure, incurs into the risk of being declassed and considered too expensive compared to the industrial competitor goods of East and North Europe Countries.

Therefore, it is necessary that traditional furniture-makers, specialized in handicraft furniture production, offer their goods and furnishing complements with the right approach, that is emphasizing their distinctiveness in tactile features, strength and accuracy not even comparable to the industrial low-cost correspondent products.

For instance, the marketing solution adopted by the Zilio Group could be reported as a suitable reaction to this matter: a creation of a website that gathers either Zilio Mobili’s traditional products either those complements of furnishing presented by Elisa Mobili.

In this way, the classic furniture company is capable of proposing its products to the Italian and European customers and potentially to those of the entire world.An experience that other furniture factories could endeavour in order to develop the production of classic Italian furniture in Italy and in the whole planet.

Beautify Your Home with Contemporary Art

If you’re looking for something to fill up your wall space and make it look more interesting, why not try contemporary art. Contemporary

art, in itself, doesn’t always have to mean anything. Contemporary art is often not a direct representation of something in its true

form, but rather it is an abstract representation of it. Contemporary art comes in many different styles - some are wild splashes of loud

color, others have smooth lines and warm colors that give a sense of calm when looked upon. Many of these contemporary art pieces were

painted a long time ago - some of them from famous artists that are known to many of us. Having a reproduced print of these artist’s

great works will definitely be an interesting addition to your home. Imagine having an art piece in your living room that was originally

painted by Pablo Picasso or Georgia O’Keeffe - that would be nice wouldn’t it? As contemporary art stretches across so many genres and

forms, it would suit very well with most home decorating styles.

Once you have bought your favorite art piece, explore unique ways of presenting it to your audience. If you have several pieces of art

that you want to hang on the wall, try grouping them creatively to add a more interesting look. If the art piece is small enough, why not

frame it and place it on a shelf or side table - it’s nice to be able to pick it up to have a closer look once in a while. Art doesn’t

have to be hung on the wall. You can simply place it on the floor and lean it against a wall or a piece of furniture, perhaps against a

cupboard or side table - just make sure that the art piece will not obstruct walkways, and that it isn’t too large or too small that

would make it look out of place.

Just hanging a solitary piece of art on the wall may not be enough, why not tell a story by including accessories or other decorative

ornaments to compliment the art work. For example, if you have a piece of Asian contemporary art on the wall, you can place a small

coffee table below it and decorate it with Asian antiques - maybe include some stone carvings of Buddha, or perhaps a few candles or

flowers to add more variety and complete the look. Make sure that the items you choose will suit the theme of the art piece and not steal

attention away from it.

Once the art is hung on the wall, use creative lighting to bring attention to it and to give it a stunning look. This will certainly lend

excitement and be a point for interesting conversation, especially in the evenings when you’re having a nice cocktail party with your

guests - or perhaps enjoying some special time alone with a loved one.

There are many exciting ways you can display your art in your home. This article only highlights a few of them. Be daring and unique -

let your hair down when it comes to creativity. There are no hard and fast rules in interior decorating. If you’re short on ideas, look

through your favorite home decorating magazines and books to draw new inspiration. The creative possibilities are endless.
